Program Structure

Level 1: Empathy and Inspiration

Module 1: Introduction to Human-Centered Design

Goals:
- Understand the principles of human-centered design (HCD).
- Recognize the importance of empathy in designing solutions for climate-vulnerable communities.
- Gain inspiration from successful HCD projects addressing food, health, ecology, and safety challenges.
Activities:
- Live Session: Introduction to HCD and its relevance to the four thematic tracks.
- Case Study Review: Analyze case studies of HCD in action within climate-vulnerable communities.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have a clear understanding of the HCD framework.
- Real-world examples of HCD will inspire participants applied to similar challenges.

Module 2: Field Research & Community Engagement

Goals:
- Develop deep empathy for the community’s challenges and needs within the chosen thematic track.
- Collect detailed insights from community members and stakeholders.
Activities:
- Self-Led Assignment: Conduct field research, including interviews, observations, and focus groups within the community.
- Empathy Mapping: Create empathy maps and community profiles based on the gathered insights.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have comprehensive empathy maps and community profiles that accurately reflect the lived experiences and needs of the community.

Module 3: Mentorship Session 1

Goals:
- Refine understanding of the core challenges identified in the empathy phase.
- Receive feedback on community insights from mentors and peers.
Activities:
- Live Mentorship Session: Present and discuss empathy maps and community profiles within thematic tracks.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have a more nuanced understanding of the challenges, guided by expert feedback.
- Participants will refine their focus for the ideation phase.

Level 2: Ideation and Co-creation

Module 4: Ideation Workshops

Goals:
- Generate innovative ideas to address the challenges identified in the empathy phase.
- Prioritize ideas based on feasibility, impact, and community needs.
Activities:
- Self-Led Modules: Track-specific ideation exercises using brainstorming techniques.
- Concept Development: Develop detailed concepts for the most promising ideas.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will produce a range of innovative ideas.
- Participants will have well-developed concepts that align with the community’s needs and the program’s goals.

Module 5: Collaborative Ideation Session

Goals:
- Refine and prioritize ideas within thematic tracks.
- Collaborate with peers and mentors to enhance the quality and feasibility of ideas.
Activities:
- Live Session: Track-specific idea sprints and group discussions to refine concepts.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have prioritized and refined concepts ready for prototyping.
- Participants will benefit from peer and mentor feedback to strengthen their ideas.

Level 3: Prototyping and Testing

Module 6: Introduction to Prototyping

Goals:
- Understand the importance of prototyping in the design process.
- Learn techniques for creating low-fidelity prototypes.
Activities:
- Self-Led Modules: Track-specific prototyping exercises focusing on creating simple, testable versions of solutions.
- Prototype Development: Begin creating prototypes based on developed concepts.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have low-fidelity prototypes that can be tested and iterated upon.
- Participants will be prepared for real-world testing and feedback collection.

Module 7: Prototyping Labs

Goals:
- Test prototypes in real-world scenarios or with target users.
- Refine prototypes based on feedback and iterative design processes.
Activities:
- Self-Led Labs: Prototype testing and refinement within the community or peer group.
- Mentorship Check-Ins: Regular sessions with mentors to troubleshoot challenges and refine prototypes.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have refined prototypes that are ready for implementation.
- Participants will incorporate feedback into their designs, enhancing the potential for successful implementation.

Level 4: Implementation and Evaluation

Module 8: Implementation Planning and Strategy Workshop

Goals:
- Develop a comprehensive implementation plan for scaling prototypes within the community.
- Ensure that solutions are feasible, sustainable, and aligned with community needs.
Activities:
- Self-Led Module: Track-specific planning exercises focusing on designing for scalability and sustainability.
- Implementation Strategy Development: Create detailed plans for resource mobilization, stakeholder engagement, and scaling.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have actionable implementation plans tailored to their chosen track.
- Participants will be prepared to deploy their solutions within the community effectively.

Module 9: Implementation Strategy Session

Goals:
- Finalize implementation plans with feedback from mentors and peers.
- Ensure that all aspects of the plan are practical and ready for execution.
Activities:
- Live Session: Track-specific discussions on implementation strategies, with feedback from mentors and peers.
- Implement the solutions with evaluation of the outcomes through evaluation of the stakeholder feedback
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have finalized, mentor-approved implementation plans.
- Participants will be equipped to move from planning to action.
- Participants will learn the outcome of their solutions directly from stakeholders

Level 5: Replication and Scaling

Module 10: Scaling Solutions Workshop

Goals:
- Develop strategies for scaling solutions beyond the initial implementation phase.
- Ensure long-term sustainability and community ownership of the solutions.
Activities:
- Self-Led Modules: Track-specific scaling strategy development, focusing on models for replication, adaptation, and partnership building.
- Sustainability Planning: Create plans that ensure the longevity and impact of solutions.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will have detailed scaling plans that are adaptable and sustainable.
- Participants will be prepared to expand their solutions to other communities or contexts.
- Participants will replicate their solution in a new community and/ or scale the solution in the base community

Module 11: Final Presentation & Scaling Session

Goals:
- Present solutions and scaling plans to a broader audience, including potential sponsors, partners, and stakeholders.
- Secure support for the long-term success and expansion of the solutions.
Activities:
- Live Session: Track-specific final presentations and discussions on scaling strategies and outcomes of scaling and replication actions.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with potential partners and sponsors to secure commitments for future support.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will successfully present their solutions, scaling strategies and outcomes.
- Participants will secure partnerships and commitments for further scaling their solutions.

Module 12: Graduation & Next Steps

Goals:
- Celebrate the participants’ achievements and the program’s outcomes.
- Outline the next steps for continued support and follow-up.
Activities:
- Live Session: Closing ceremony with commitments to action from participants and implementation partners.
- Post-Program Support Overview: Provide information on continued mentorship, funding opportunities, and follow-up sessions.
Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will leave the program with clear action plans and ongoing support.
- The program’s impact will be extended through continued engagement and follow-up.
